Crossbench senators baulk at uni cuts

September 13, 2017

Simon Birmingham is still confident his higher education changes will get through parliament.

Crossbench senator Derryn Hinch is certain parliament won't accept the Turnbull government's overhaul of university funding in its current form.

Senator Hinch has "some major worries" about aspects of the package, which includes cutting funding in 2018 and 2019, raising student fees, lowering the repayment threshold for HECS-HELP student loans, and tying some funding to performance measures.

He told ABC radio he wants the repayment threshold to kick in at $50,000 rather than the government's preferred $42,000 level.
