MURRAY River Council has withdrawn its support for the original option to replace the Swan Hill bridge.
And instead suggested an alternative proposal.
Councillor Neil Gorey said while the previous Wakool Shire Council voted in favour of the 9A option at Riverside Park back in 2014, the current council no longer supported that position.
‘‘It’s time to move on from 9A and investigate other options,’’ Cr Gorey said.
‘‘The majority of residents at Murray Downs do not support the Riverside Park location, nor does Swan Hill Rural City, so it’s time we progressed this project for the benefit of our residents.’’
Mayor Chris Bilkey said council would like to see some new options investigated.
‘‘So we are requesting that VicRoads consider the John Forrest bridge proposal that has had some discussion of late,’’ he said.
This option would see a new bridge built alongside the existing structure with a view to dismantle and relocate various elements of the old bridge for heritage display and preservation.
Current heritage orders do, however, make this particular proposal challenging.
“There are still some ambiguities regarding the heritage overlay on the bridge in regards to this suggested option and what this means or if it is even a possibility, but it is certainly worth pursuing to keep the project moving,’’ Cr Bilkey said.
‘‘We hope our rescission encourages VicRoads and Roads and Maritime Services to explore these other options; we want the matter to be revisited to determine the best solution for the communities affected.’’
